About the association

Our story

We are a young Czech publishing house founded in 2021. Our main goal is to publish translated books from small and overlooked languages. We want to find and promote quality literature which, under current circumstances, is hardly finding its way to the Czech reader, simply because it is written in languages that are not among the world's most widely spoken.

Our intention

The intention is to create editions, one for each language, in which we will be able to publish both classic, time-tested works that the Czech reader has not yet had the opportunity to get to know, and works of contemporary literature that we find valuable. We want to be pioneers in this respect, as can be seen, for example, in our plan to publish the first direct translation from Basque into Czech. Overall, we would like to enrich Czech literature by adding many works that have been missing for the reasons mentioned above.

We are therefore founding Euskaldun, a publishing house to fulfil this aim. We shall hold fast to it, for we are convinced that without it our efforts would lose their meaning.

Name

The name EUSKALDUN is borrowed from Basque and can be translated as "Basque-speaking" as well as "Bask". We did not choose from that - at the same time ancient and very contemporary - language by chance. For us, Basque to a certain extent symbolizes the meaning of our work: it is a language that cannot be at all sure of its existence for several millennia, a language that has never been favoured by political circumstances, but a language that is so ingrained in the culture of the Basque nation, in the way its people live and think, that no Franco (and other psychopaths of his ilk) has ever managed to eradicate it.
